FIGHTING TIGER ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Director Kevin McCarthy announced today that seven Fighting Tiger student/athletes have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Academic All-American Team for the 2006-07 academic year.
Earning NJCAA Academic All-American honors by accumulating over a 3.60 grade point average during the year were: men’s golf team member and Animal Science major Joe Winski, Youngsville, NY, Jefferson Youngsville High School, Joe Lydon, Barrytown, NY, Red Hook High School, who was a member of the men’s cross country program and an Environmental Science major, men’s baseball team member John Wallace, Avoca, NY, Avoca High School, an Agricultural Engineering major, women’s basketball team member and Physical Education major Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, women’s soccer team member and Early Childhood major Victoria Gerlach, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, and women’s soccer team member and Natural Science major Bethany Garretson, Cherry Valley, NY, Cherry Valley-Springfield High School. Ryan Rockefeller, Bolivar, NY, Bolivar-Richburg High School, a member of the men’s baseball team earned NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American honors earning over a 3.80 grade point average while majoring in Wildlife Studies.
“We are extremely proud of these individuals for their exceptional contributions to our institution and our athletic program academically and athletically,” said McCarthy. “Academic All-American awards may be the most significant honors given to student/athletes because they show that a young person has found the perfect balance between their chosen sport and their academic discipline while excelling in both endeavors.”
