MCMILLEN AWARDED 2007 SUNY COBLESKILL STEVEN A. WARDE AWARD
SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball/softball team member Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, has been named the 2007 recipient of the athletic program’s Steven A. Warde Award for sportsmanship. The award was presented to McMillen at the college’s recent annual Athletic Awards Convocation and is given to the Fighting Tiger senior female student/athlete who by her action on the playing field, in the classroom and in the campus community has exemplified the code of sportsmanship and leadership.
This season McMillen was an integral part of the women’s basketball program’s success earning First Team All-Mountain Valley Conference honors and First Team All-NJCAA Region III Division III honors after a year that saw the 5’10” power forward/center emerge as a powerful post presence averaging 14.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game connecting on an impressive 159 of 316 attempts from the field for a 50.3% field goal shooting mark helping the team to a 22-7 overall record including a 13-3 league record on the way to a second place finish in conference play. During her Fighting Tiger basketball career the program posted 46-12 overall record the best two-year total in school history while making back-to-back NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament appearances.
On the softball diamond the Greenville, NY, native was a two-year starter at Shortstop the season being voted by her teammates as Fighting Tigers Most Valuable Player after batting .431 during the season.
A major in SUNY Cobleskill’s Physical Education, Recreation & Sports Studies program, McMillen will attend SUNY Cortland next year with the intention of majoring in Physical Education and competing athletically for the Red Dragons.
The award is presented yearly in honor of the late Steven A. Warde a long-time faculty member at the college who founded the Cobleskill Track & Field and Cross Country programs in 1948 and brought the programs to national prominence highlighted by the 1959 NJCAA Men’s National Cross Country Championship.
