YOUNG NAMED COBLESKILL SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD WINNER
SUNY Cobleskill men’s baseball team member Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, has been awarded the Nick Iorio Men’s Scholar Athlete Award for being the Fighting Tiger’s top student/athlete by the school’s athletic program. The senior Landscape Design major compiled over a 3.40 grade point average while earning All-Mountain Valley Conference honors during both of his years in the Cobleskill program.
The Fighting Tiger co-captain helped lead Cobleskill to the program’s first winning overall season since 1995 and the best NJCAA Region III Division III and Mountain Valley Conference records in school history. The team posted an 18-17 overall mark with a 15-6 record versus NJCAA Region III Division III opponents and a 12-4 Mountain Valley Conference record. Cobleskill made its first NJCAA Region III Tournament appearance since 1995.
At the plate, Young was an offensive juggernaut for the Fighting Tigers batting .433 on the season with 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs with 12 stolen bases. A dynamic run producer, the Delmar native scored 35 runs and drove in 31 runs on the season. In the field, he posted a .988 fielding average committing only 2 errors in 170 attempts on the season. On the mound, the left-hander posted a 3-2 overall record with a 3.23 ERA in eight appearances on the season for Cobleskill.
The Iorio Award is named for Cobleskill’s former Dead of Students, Athletic Director and Coach Nick Iorio. It is given to the male student/athlete who has combined an outstanding academic record with a successful playing career. |
