FIGHTING TIGER WEEKLY RECAP 3/3/08
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team captured the program’s third NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament Championship over the weekend at Herkimer Community College in Herkimer, NY. The Fighting Tigers rallied past the number five seeded Lazers of Onondaga Community College from Syracuse, NY in the quarterfinals on Friday by a 73-71 score then stunned the nation’s number one team the undefeated, and number one seeded, Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College 86-79 in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Cobleskill captured the 2008 Championship on Sunday by defeating the nation’s number sixth ranked team and the tournament’s number two seeded team the host Generals of Herkimer Community College by a score of 77-75. Senior guard Darryl Burns Jr., Brooklyn, NY, High School of Art & Design, was named the tournament’s Most-Valuable-Player after scoring 15 points in the win over Hudson Valley and 16 in the championship versus Herkimer. Senior power forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, and freshman guard Michael Knight, Spring Valley, NY, Spring Valley High School, were also named to the All-Tournament Team for the Fighting Tigers who are now 25-6 on the season. Cobleskill now advances to the “Elite Eight” of the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament hosted by SUNY Delhi in Delhi, NY, from Thursday March 13th thru Saturday March 15th.
The Fighting Tiger women’s basketball team dropped a 75-53 decision on Saturday to number two seeded Broome Community College from Binghamton, NY in the semifinal round of the 2008 NJCAA Region III Division III Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament hosted by Tompkins-Cortland Community College in Dryden, NY. Cobleskill had advanced to the semifinals by defeating Herkimer Community College from Herkimer, NY by a 59-36 margin in the tournament’s quarterfinal round on Friday evening. Freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per contest converting on 12-of-15 shots from the field for an impressive 80.0% field goal shooting mark. The Fighting Tigers close the season with a program all-time best 25-5 overall record for the season.
The Cobleskill men’s basketball team will meet NJCAA Region XIX Champions of Middlesex Community College from Edison, NJ in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament hosted by SUNY Delhi in Delhi, NY on Thursday March 13th at 8:00 PM. The Colts are currently 27-3 overall on the season and ranked second in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
