FIGHTING TIGER WEEKLY RECAP 4/28/08
Freshman multi-event athlete Brittany Armstrong, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, turned in a pair of NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championship qualifying performances at the 2008 Capital District Classic hosted by Union College in Schenectady, NY, on Saturday. Armstrong placed fifth overall in the Long Jump with an effort of 14’10 ½” and fifth in the Triple Jump with a mark of 31’1” for the Fighting Tigers who are currently ranked fourth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
The Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team posted their first .500 season since 1993 with wins over Mohawk Valley Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action in Utica, NY on Thursday by an 8-2 margin and against visiting Dean Community College on Sunday by a score of 17-4. Cobleskill was led by freshman attackman Jake Hutchins, East Greenbush, NY, Columbia High School, who scored four goals and passed out seven assists for the Fighting Tigers in three games during the week. The Orange & Black close the season with a 7-7 overall record including a 1-3 mark versus league opponents.
Senior golfer Andy Kincaid, Horseheads, NY, Horseheads High School, fired a round of 74 on Sunday to place second overall at the 2008 SUNY Cobleskill Invitational hosted by the Fighting Tigers at the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club. The Fighting Tigers posted a team score 328 to place third in the field of eight teams.
The Cobleskill men’s tennis program split a pair of matches during the week falling on the road to Mountain Valley Conference rival Herkimer Community College by a score of 6-3 then defeating visiting SUNY Delhi on Thursday by a score of 7-2. Senior Greg Klopfer, Voorheesville, NY, Voorheesville High School, posted a pair of victories at the number three singles position to bring his season record to 8-0 on the year. The Fighting Tigers are currently 5-3 overall on the year to date.
Freshman sprinter Leon Thompson, Manhattan, NY, Fredrick Douglas Academy, sprinted to a victory in the 200 Meters for the Cobleskill outdoor track & field team at the 2008 Capital District Classic hosted by Union College in Schenectady, NY, on Saturday. Thompson met the national qualifying mark in the event with a time of 22.81 seconds for the Fighting Tigers who are currently ranked third in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
The Fighting Tiger women’s softball team swept a pair of Mountain Valley Conference games from visiting SUNY Delhi on Saturday at Fighting Tiger Park by scores of 14-6 and 7-0 to improve their overall record to 7-9 on the season with a 6-4 record in conference play. Senior Anastasia Yakaboski, Calverton, NY, Riverhead High School, was the hitting star for Cobleskill in the opener going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI in the contest.
The Cobleskill baseball team pushed their overall record to 14-17 on the season by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday versus visiting Corning Community College taking the first game 7-6 in eight innings then dropping the nightcap by an 11-3 score. Freshman pitcher Tom Wiener, Montrose, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, posted the win in the opener going the distance striking out eight in the game to improve his record to 5-3 overall on the season.
