FIGHTING TIGER WEEKLY RECAP 1/28/08
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball program won two-of-three contests this week defeating visiting Word of Life Bible Institute on Tuesday 118-49, falling by a 56-50 margin to Herkimer Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action on the road in Herkimer, NY on Thursday then traveling to Delhi, NY on Saturday to beat SUNY Delhi in league action by a 73-69 score. Senior guard Darryl Burns Jr., Brooklyn, NY, High School of Art & Design, recorded his first career double/double in points and rebounds in the win over Delhi on Saturday with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game. The Fighting Tigers are currently 15-3 overall on the season with a 5-2 record in league play and ranked tenth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
The Fighting Tigers women’s basketball team split a pair of Mountain Valley Conference contests this week losing to nationally tenth ranked Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY on Tuesday 57-49 before besting visiting Herkimer Community College at home on Thursday by a score of 56-39. Freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, powered the team to victory over Herkimer scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to go with six steals and two blocked shots. Cobleskill is currently ranked ninth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll with a 15-2 overall record including a 5-1 mark in conference play.
The Cobleskill men’s indoor track & field program posted a team score of 32 points to place seventh in a field of twelve teams at the prestigious Class of ’32 Invitational hosted by Colgate University in Hamilton, NY on Saturday. Freshman hurdler Jon Figueroa, North Branch, NY, Sullivan West High School, set a new program record in the 55 Meter Hurdles placing sixth in the event with a time of 8.17 seconds.
Senior NJCAA All-American Jen Villanova, Clifton Park, NY, Shenendehowa High School, placed fourth in the Long Jump with an effort of 5.03 meters and fourth in the Triple Jump with a mark of 10.06 meters at the Class of ’32 Invitational hosted by Colgate University in Hamilton, NY on Saturday. The Fighting Tigers placed tenth in the meet posting a team score of eight points on the day.
The Fighting Tigers women’s swimming & diving team placed second on Wednesday at their own 2008 SUNY Cobleskill Invitational then posted a fourth place finish at the 2008 SUNY Delhi Distance Invitational in Delhi, NY on Saturday. Senior distance swimmer Megan Holstead, Laurens, NY, Laurens High School, continued her outstanding season at the Cobleskill Invitational winning the 500 Freestyle by lowering her national seed time in the event to 6:49.57 and placing second in the 200 Freestyle hitting the national qualifying mark with a time of 2:21.83.
Senior Sam Adamoschek, Canajoharie, NY Canajoharie High School, won the 100 Freestyle at the 2008 SUNY Cobleskill Invitational on Wednesday posting a time of 59.23 seconds then placed third in the 50 Freestyle with a mark of 26.04 seconds meeting NJCAA National Qualifying Standards in each event for the Orange & Black.
