FIGHTING TIGER WEEKLY RECAP 5/1/06
The Fighting Tiger men’s tennis team defeated Herkimer Community College by a 9-0 margin to win their first Mountain Valley Conference Championship in program history finishing the regular season with a 7-2 overall record and a 4-0 mark versus league opponents. Over the weekend Cobleskill placed third at the 2006 NJCAA Region III Tennis Championships hosted by Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, NY. Freshman number one singles Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamsville North High School, became the first Fighting Tiger player to win a Region III Individual Championship and has now qualified for the NJCAA Division III National Championships in Plano, TX from Thursday May 18th thru Sunday May 20th.
The Cobleskill women’s outdoor track & field team posted a score 131 points to place third at the 2006 Mountain Valley Conference Championships hosted by the Fighting Tigers on Saturday. Senior Nichole Franke, Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur High School, won the league championship in the Javelin meeting the NJCAA National Qualifying Standard with a toss of 27.57 meters.
Freshman distance runner Creig Levens, Berlin, NY, Berlin High School, won the Mountain Valley Conference Championship for the Fighting Tiger outdoor track & field team at the 2006 MVC Championships hosted by Fighting Tigers on Saturday with an NJCAA National Qualifying time of 34:05.0. Cobleskill posted a team score of 120.5 points to finish second overall in the championship meet. Levens earlier in the week captured the 3000 Meter Steeplechase at the Ithaca College Meet on Wednesday meeting the national qualifying standard with a time of 10:24.0.
The Fighting Tiger baseball team evened their overall record at 15-15 during the week with a 12-4 mark versus NJCAA Region III Division III completion. Cobleskill came from behind on Wednesday to defeat visiting Columbia-Greene by a 14-11 margin then took to the road on Friday to sweep Morrisville State College by 5-0 and 7-2. The team closed the week by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Corning Community College on Saturday dropping the opener 11-3 then coming back to take the nightcap 6-5. Freshman hurler John Wallace, Avoca, NY, Avoca High School, tossed his first career shutout versus Morrisville State striking out seven Mustangs in the contest.
The women’s softball team dropped a doubleheader to Mountain Valley Conference rival Herkimer Community College at home on Friday by scores of 18-3 and 21-6 to fall to 3-9 on the season. Freshman infielder Michelle Radley, Averill Park, NY, Averill Park High School, went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with two runs scored and an RBI for the Fighting Tigers.
