FIGHTING TIGERS SHOOT DOWN ITHACA JV 79-46 FOR MCCARTHY’S 300TH WIN
Using their trademark strong defense and an offensive barrage the SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team stopped the Ithaca College Junior Varsity in Cobleskill, NY last night by a score of 79-46. The win over the baby Bombers improves the Fighting Tigers’ overall record to 8-2 on the season. The victory was also a milestone win for Head Coach Kevin McCarthy marking his 300th at the helm of the Fighting Tiger program in front of a partisan Cobleskill home crowd.
After moving out to a 40-22 halftime advantage courtesy of stingy defense and highlight reel passing, the Fighting Tigers used the second half to display the talents of their capable reserve players. During the contest the Orange and Black employed 18 players with 14 finding the scoring column in the game.
Once again the Fighting Tigers pounded the opposition in the paint and on the glass as freshman power forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, scored 23 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots while freshman forward Stanley Francois, Valley Cottage, NY, Suffern High School, added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in the win. Senior swingman Devon Moore, Brooklyn, NY, Family Academy High School, also scored in double figures for Cobleskill with 10 points to go with five assists and three rebounds.
The Cobleskill depth was apparent as a number of different Fighting Tiger players made a number of different contributions to the victory totals. Freshman guard Jayson Taylor, Deer Park, NY, Ossining High School, passed out six assists to go with two points and two seals while freshman center Jude Franck, Spring Valley, NY, Ramapo High School, had three points, three rebounds and three blocked shots and freshman center Vladimir Colas, Warwick, NY, Warwick High School, grabbed seven rebounds in the victory. Freshman forward Artist McDuffie, Brooklyn, NY, Benjamin Bannecker High School, added three points and five rebounds and freshman point guard Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, added five points on the night.
With his 300th Fighting Tiger victory in the record book coach Kevin McCarthy was more focused on the win rather than the milestone.
“I’m more concerned with the fact that his was our eighth win of the season than my 300th here at Cobleskill,” said McCarthy. “Right now I’m more focused on the here and now rather than the past. This is a game that we are supposed to win comfortably and play the entire roster and that’s what we did tonight. I thought after the first few minutes we did a good job defensively and that we played unselfishly offensively. This gives us a seven game winning streak and I think that we are moving in the right direction. Now we play at Adirondack on Wednesday so we’ve got to focus on that starting right now.”
The Fighting Tigers will next travel to Glens Falls, NY on Wednesday December 6th for a Mountain Valley Conference game versus the Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College beginning at 7:00 PM.
