FIGHTING TIGERS GO RETRO TO DEFEAT HOLYOKE CC 76-42
It was “Retro Night” at SUNY Cobleskill last night for the men’s basketball program and even though the name on the team’s jerseys said Aggies instead of Fighting Tigers the result was similar as the Orange & Black posted a 76-42 victory over visiting Holyoke Community College in a non-regional affair last night in Cobleskill, NY. Cobleskill is improves to 21-4 overall on the season and are currently ranked seventh in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
“I thought that we moved the ball very well against their half court defense and in transition,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “That kind of ball movement usually leads to good scoring opportunities and I think it played a major role in the fact that we shot the ball exceptionally well from three-point range. Defensively, I like the way we attacked them and turned them into basically a perimeter team. For the most part they had to work extremely hard for their scoring opportunities. We are continuing to improve and now we’ve got to keep finding ways to win heading into the home stretch of the regular season.”
Cobleskill barraged the visiting Cougars from long range connecting on 10-of-20 shots from behind the three-point line as freshman forward Ryan Greene, Richmondville, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, scored a career high of 20 points including four from beyond the arch while freshman guard Jayson Taylor, Deer Park, NY, Ossining High School, nailed five three-pointers to highlight a 15 point, three assist, three steal performance. Senior swingman Devon Moore, Brooklyn, NY, Family Academy High School, had the other Cobleskill triple as part of a nine point, four rebound, and three assist performance.
The Cobleskill inside attack continued to play a major role in the team’s success as freshman center/forward Vladimir Colas, Warwick, NY, Warwick High School, scored eight points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots, freshman forward Stanley Francois, Valley Cottage, NY, Suffern High School, had eight points to go with five rebounds, freshman center Kyle Mitchell, Hadley, NY, Hadley-Luzerne High School, added seven points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots and freshman center Jude Franck, Spring Valley, NY, Ramapo High School, turned in a five point seven rebound effort on the evening.
Weather permitting the Fighting Tigers will next play host to the Elmira College Junior Varsity on Thursday evening February 15th beginning at 7:00 PM. The game will be senior night with a pre-game ceremony honoring senior Devon Moore.
TIGER/AGGIE NOTES: The Fighting Tiger defense forced 25 turnovers on the evening and held the Cougars to 17-for-45 from the field on the night for a shooting percentage of 37.8%.
