FIGHTING TIGERS BUST DELI BRONCOS 77-67 IN MEN’S B-BALL
Under the best of circumstances a men’s basketball game between SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Delhi is a physical affair; but when it happens for the second time in a four-day period, after Cobleskill’s 73-69 road victory over the Broncos on Saturday, it is the perfect recipe for a cage-match WWE style. After the dust settled from the contest, that featured 54 fouls, 88 free throw attempts and three disqualifications, it was the Fighting Tigers emerging on the winning end of a 77-67 score over their long-time rivals. The victory improves the Cobleskill overall record to 16-3 on the year including a 6-2 mark in Mountain Valley Conference play.
“I think this game was indicative of what happens when you play your chief rival twice in a four-day span of time,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “I thought that our depth and ability to rebound were the keys to this win. This was by no means a very pretty game to watch from a fan’s perspective but this was a vintage Cobleskill/Delhi game and very much the type of game that teams will be play across the Mountain Valley Conference over the next month heading towards the post season.”
Freshman swingman Michael Knight, Spring Valley, NY, Spring Valley High School, came off the Fighting Tiger bench to post career highs in points with 15 and in rebounds with six on the night to lead the victory whiles senior point guard Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, recorded his second consecutive double/double against the Broncos with 11 points and 10 assists to go with five rebounds.
The Orange & Black also received strong contributions from freshman guard Nyquan Bellamy, Poughkeepsie, NY, Poughkeepsie High School, who scored 13 points and passed out three assists off the bench and from senior power forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, who scored 12 points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked a pair of shots on the night. Senior guard Darryl Burns Jr., Brooklyn, NY, High School of Arts & Design, also continued his strong play with eight points and two steals.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday February 2nd when they host the Royals of Schenectady Community College for a Mountain Valley Conference game with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: Former Fighting Tiger Daniel Pierre, Brooklyn, NY, is currently averaging 15.1 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 69.0% from the field for NCAA Division II member institution St. Edwards University in Austin, TX.
