Kevin McCarthy completed his fifteenth season as head coach of the Fighting Tigers in 2007-08 and is the winningest coach in program history. McCarthy returned after a year’s coaching sabbatical to lead the Orange & Black to a 21-8 overall mark and a return to the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament earning Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors for the fourth time previously having been honored by the league in 1995, 1996 and 1998. Under his direction the program has posted a 313-111 career record at Cobleskill giving him a 73.8% winning percentage. Under his direction the Fighting Tigers have been nationally ranked in every Final Season NJCAA Division III National Poll since 1994. Cobleskill has spent a combined total of ten weeks ranked number one in the nation during this time.
With McCarthy at the helm the Fighting Tigers have won three Mountain Valley Conference Western Division titles and two overall Mountain Valley Conference Championships. Cobleskill has made fourteen NJCAA Division III Region III Play-off appearances highlighted by Region III Championships in 1998 and 2005. The Fighting Tigers advanced to NJCAA Division III Final Four in 1998 and the Elite Eight in 2005. All twelve of the college’s twenty-win season’s have come under his direction including a SUNY System record of eleven consecutive twenty-win seasons from 1994 thru 2005.
McCarthy has been named Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year three times, NJCAA Region III Division III Coach-of-the-Year twice and was named the NJCAA District I Coach-of-the-Year in 1998 and 2005. During his tenure thirty-five Fighting Tigers have been earned All-Mountain Valley Conference recognition, thirty have been named to the All-Region III team and seven have been selected as NJCAA Division III All-Americans. In 2004 the Fighting Tiger mentor was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with the organization’s Guardian of the Game Award for Education becoming the first junior college coach ever honored with a Guardian Award. Also in 2004 the Fighting Tiger mentor was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors as the Northeastern District recipient of the General Sports TURF Systems Athletic Director-of-the-Year Award.
A former All-Conference selection during his playing days at Clinton Community College, McCarthy began his coaching career at Granville High School in Granville, NY. Following a three-year stint at Granville, he served in assistant coaching positions at Central Michigan University and at the University of Chicago. He came to Cobleskill after a six-year stint as the head coach at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
During the summer of 2000 coach McCarthy served as an assistant coach of a NJCAA Division II & III all-star team organized by the NJCAA Coaches Association that competed in, and won, the first international basketball tournament held on the Caribbean island nation of Antigua. The Fighting Tiger mentor currently serves as the Division III National Representative to the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association’s Executive Counsel.
In addition to his coaching duties, McCarthy is Cobleskill’s Director of Athletics and the Chairman of the college’s Department of Physical Education. He is also a tenured Associate Professor of Physical Education.
