COBLESKILL LINKSTERS CAPTURE FIFTH CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE TITLE
The “drive for five” is complete and the SUNY Cobleskill golf team has cemented its position in Mountain Valley Conference history as a dynasty after winning their fifth consecutive league title on Friday April 24th at the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club. The Fighting Tigers posted a team score of 304 to finish 34 shots in front of their next closest competitor in a field of four teams.
Three Fighting Tiger team members earned All-Mountain Valley Conference honors highlighted by senior Shaun Marcellus, Hamilton, NY, Hamilton High School, who placed second overall with a score of 1-over-par 73. Senior Dan Spano, Schenevus, NY, Schenevus High School, finished fourth with a score of 75 while senior Matt Schulte, Oneonta, NY, Oneonta High School, finished fifth for the Fighting Tigers posting a score of 76 to join Marcellus in earning all-league honors. Senior Ryan Dwyer, Theresa, NY, Indian River High School, rounded out the scoring by placing eighth with a score of 80. Freshman Mark McGraw, Hancock, NY, Hancock Central High School, also cracked the top ten for Cobleskill with a score of 82 to place ninth overall in the event.
The Fighting Tigers received little rest after their conference victory traveling to Cortland, NY on Saturday for the Tompkins-Cortland Community College Invitational held at the Elm Tree Country Club. Cobleskill posted a score of 308 to place third in a field of nine teams.
Matt Schulte led the Cobleskill attack with a fifth place finish with a score of 72 on the day. Ryan Dwyer and Shaun Marcellus finished in a twelfth place tie with identical rounds of 77 while Dan Spano closed out the teams scoring by finishing thirty-first overall with an 82 for the tournament.
Cobleskill concluded their active weekend on Sunday by traveling to Watertown, NY for the Jefferson Community College Invitational. Playing their third event in three days the Fighting Tigers placed third in the field of ten teams with a score of 328.
Matt Schulte once again paced Cobleskill placing third overall with a round of 77 followed by Ryan Dwyer in fifth place with a score of 78. The Fighting Tiger scoring was rounded out by Shaun Marcellus in twenty-eighth place with a round of 86 and Senior Matt Tierney, Hyde Park, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, in thirty-second place with a score of 87.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Monday May 10th when they travel to Delhi, NY for the 2005 NJCAA Region III Championship hosted by Delhi Tech at the Delhi Golf Club from May 10th thru May 12th.
