FIGHTING TIGER GOLFERS CAPTURE 2003 REGION III CHAMPIONSHIP
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s golf team captured the 2003 NJCAA Region III Championship in dramatic fashion overcoming the wind, mud and rain to win the title in a one-hole play-off over Jamestown Community College at the Cornell University Golf Course in Ithaca, NY. The Fighting Tigers posted an overall two-day score of 662 before the play-off.
Under the Region III tie-breaker format each team’s four lowest scoring members on the second day of the tournament square off in a one-hole play-off with team that posts the lowest four-man total score being declared the winner.
The Fighting Tiger quartet of freshman Todd Czepiel, Booneville, NY, Adirondack High School, freshman Seth Markley, Sauquoit, NY, Sauquoit Valley High School, senior Brett Seiler, New South Berlin, NY, Unadilla High School, and senior Jessie Gawlik, Oakfield, NY, Oakfield-Alabama High School, made like “Tiger Woods” posting a combine score of even par to easily outdistance the Jayhawks by four shots.
Todd Czepiel won the Region III Individual Championship winning a three-way play-off to claim medalist honors after posting rounds of 76 and 78 for a two-day total of 154. Seth Markley also earned All-Region III honors shooting rounds of 82 and 84 to finish in tenth place overall with a score of 166. Freshman Steve Cole, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, finish tied for fifteenth in the event with a score of 172 after shooting rounds of 81 and 91 for the event.
The Fighting Tiger seniors rounded out the scoring as Jessie Gawlik placed twenty-first shooting rounds of 91 and 84 for a 175 total and Brett Seiler was twenty-third with rounds of 87 and 90 for a 177 total.
Cobleskill will next travel to the 2003 NJCAA Division III National Championships to be hosted by Jamestown Community College at the Chautauqua Golf Course from Monday June 2nd thru Friday June 6th.
