FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S LAX DEFEATS MVCC 8-2 TO REACH .500 MARK
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team posted an important 8-2 Mountain Valley Conference road victory on Thursday over Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY. The win improves the Fighting Tigers overall record to 6-6 on the season and closes out the team’s conference season with a 1-3 mark. The win also moves the team’s NJCAA Region III record to 4-4 on the year to date and keeps them in the hunt for an NJCAA Region III Tournament bid.
Cobleskill received multiple scoring performances from senior midfielder Andrew Abbott, Onondaga, NY, Corcoran High School, who scored a pair of goals to go with an assist and from freshman attackman Jake Hutchins, East Greenbush, NY, Columbia High School, who tallied two goals and an assist on the afternoon. Also scoring solo goals in the contest were: freshman attackman Brendan Wemssen, Seaford, NY, Seaford High School, freshman midfielder Matt Pierce, Ogdensburg, NY, Heuvelton High School, freshman attackman Paul Tuccillo, Garden City, NY, Garden City High School, and freshman midfielder Alex Harwylkiewicz, West Babylon, NY, West Babylon High School. The Orange & Black’s scoring was rounded out with an assist from freshman midfielder Hunter D’Andraia, Albany, NY, New Paltz High School.
Freshman goalie Rob McDonald, Amherst, NY, Amherst High School, continued to anchor the Fighting Tiger defense with a 28 save performance in the contest.
“We came out knowing that we needed to win in order to keep our play-off hopes alive and our defense set the tone early on with physical play and Rob McDonald shutting down their offense with 28 saves,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Ryan Gunzinger. “We won today on the strength of our defense, a balanced scoring attack and by dominating them in groundballs. Now we move on to play Jefferson with our play-off life at stake. This is going to be the biggest home game that we’ve had since 1993 which was the last time we made the regional tournament.”
The Fighting Tigers will host a pair of NJCAA Region III contest over the weekend beginning on Saturday April 26th at 1:00 PM when they host the Cannoneers of Jefferson Community College at the Cobleskill Lacrosse Complex. Cobleskill will then play host to the Bulldogs of Dean College on Sunday April 27th in their season finale with face-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
