WEIL NAMED NEW FIGHTING TIGER HEAD LACROSSE COACH
SUNY Cobleskill Director of Athletics Kevin McCarthy announced today that former SUNY Cortland Assistant Coach Todd Weil has been named as the Fighting Tigers new Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. Weil becomes the seventh head coach in the program’s history replacing Tim Dobbs who posted a 9-37 record in four years at Cobleskill.
“We are pleased that we could get someone with coach Weil’s lacrosse background to help us attempt to take the program to the next level,” said McCarthy. “I think that Todd’s knowledge of the New York lacrosse community will be a valuable asset in our efforts to take the program to the next level of competitiveness.”
The Syracuse, NY native was a three-sport standout at Skaneateles High School where he played Football, Hockey and Lacrosse earning All-Onondaga League honors as a defenseman in 1992 in Lacrosse. After high school Weil went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education from SUNY Cortland in 1997. While at Cortland Weil was defender for the Red Dragon Lacrosse team in 1995 and 1996.
Upon graduation, he accepted a position at the New York State Military Academy in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY as a teacher/coach at the school from 1998 through 2001. As the school’s Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach, Weil’s squad captured Hudson Valley Independent League titles in both 2000 and 2001 earning bids to the New England Prep School Championship Tournament in those seasons. In 2002, he moved to The Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, NY for a two year stint as a teacher/coach/dorm parent. During his high school coaching career Weil’s teams compiled a 54-36 overall record for a .600 winning percentage.
Weil returned to SUNY Cortland in 2004 as an assistant coach under Red Dragons Head Coach Lelan Rogers where his duties included working with the team’s defense and serving as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. During his season with the Red Dragons the program posted a 17-3 overall record to finish as the SUNYAC Conference runners-up and earned a NCAA Division III Tournament bid. Cortland was eliminated in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.
“I’m excited to be coming to a program with the rich lacrosse tradition that SUNY Cobleskill has had in past years and look forward to the challenge ahead because I see this as a great opportunity for me professionally to be a full-time coach at the college level,” said Weil. “I want us to run when the opportunity presents itself but I think that we are going to be a primarily ball control style of team offensively this year. On the defensive end of the field, I can assure you that we will not let offenses get comfortable around the cage. There’s a lot of work to accomplish but the programs been down for a long time and now we’ve got to get things moving upward.”
In his position, Weil will also serve as the Director of the SUNY Cobleskill Campus Fitness Center. |
