FIGHTING TIGER LACROSSE SET TO RETURN TO ACTION IN 2007
After a year’s hiatus the SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse program will return to action in 2007 boasting a full roster, full slate of games and a new head coach. Leading the Fighting Tigers into the season will be first-year Head Coach Ryan Gunzinger. A native of Cobleskill, Gunzinger becomes the eighth head coach in program history to lead the Orange & Black.
“We’re excited to be back playing after not fielding a team last season,” said Gunzinger. “This is a great group of hard working kids who are determined to lay down a solid foundation and start turning things around.”
Leading the rebuilding process on the field will be senior midfielder Tom Cunningham, Skaneateles, NY, Skaneateles High School, the program’s Most-Valuable-Player in 2005. The Skaneateles, NY native led the team in scoring with 23 goals and seven assists for a total of 30 points while picking up 93 ground balls in 10 games for the Fighting Tigers during the season.
Cobleskill will also be looking for help from: rugged freshman defenseman Mike Steves, Syracuse, NY, Nottingham High School, who at 6’2” 205 lbs is going to be counted to be a physical presence on the field, freshman midfielder/attackman Dan Russ, Rensselaer, NY, Columbia High School, who should contribute in the scoring department and freshman goalie Brad Wilson, West Point, NY, James O’Neil High School, who will be looked to for stellar play between the pipes for the Fighting Tigers this year.
With a new season on tap Coach Gunzinger has some definite ideas about this season and future seasons for the program.
“This season we’re going to be an aggressive and hard hitting team on defense and offensively we are going to look to employ a ball-control system for at least this year,” said the Cobleskill mentor. “I feel this year our recruited players from last year are determined to prove themselves on the field. We’ve started to right the ship and we’re going to start taking the necessary steps to build a program that we can all be proud of both on and off of the field.”
The Fighting Tigers will open the 2007 campaign on Sunday March 11th when they travel to Baltimore, MD to meet Catonsville Community College on the Cardinal’s home field beginning at 1:00 PM. Cobleskill will then open the home portion of the 2007 season on Saturday March 24th when they host the Cannoneers of Jefferson Community College in a NJCAA Region III contest beginning at 12:00 PM. Admission to all Fighting Tiger regular season home games is free of charge to the general public. |
