FIGHTING TIGER LAX POUNDS CAYUGA 18-3 IN REGION III ACTION

On Tuesday afternoon at the Cobleskill Lacrosse Complex the SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team posted their most convincing victory of the season routing the Spartans of Cayuga Community College from Auburn, NY by an 18-3 margin in NJCAA Region III action. The victory improves the Fighting Tiger overall record to 4-5 on the season and equals the team’s victory total from the 2007 campaign when they finished with the best record in thirteen seasons at 4-7.
The Fighting Tiger scoring onslaught started at the 10:48 mark of the first period and continued throughout the contest as seven team members ripped through the Spartan defense to find pay dirt. Freshman Brendan Wemssen, Seaford, NY, Seaford High School, led the assault on the visitor’s net with four goals and three assists while freshman Alex Harwylkiewicz, West Babylon, NY, West Babylon High School, added four goals and two assists in the game. Cobleskill also received multiple scoring efforts from: freshman attackman Jake Hutchins, East Greenbush, NY, Columbia High School, with three goals and an assist, freshman midfielder Hunter D’Andraia, Albany, NY, New Paltz High School, who also had three goals and an assist, senior attackman Matt Hughes, Wallkill, NY, Wallkill High School, chipped in two goals, and senior midfielder Andy Abbott, Onondaga, NY, Corcoran High School, had one goal and two assists on the day. Cobleskill also received a goal from freshman midfielder Greg Tarsa, Averill Park, NY, Averill Park High School, and freshman midfielder Matt Pierce, Ogdensburg, NY, Heuvelton High School, contributed an assist.
In the net starting freshman goalkeeper Rob McDonald, Amherst, NY, Amherst High School, had 10 saves on the day while freshman reserve goalie Tom Knezick, Columbia, NJ, Northeast Regional High School, turned in a solid effort with seven saves during his stint in the net for the Fighting Tigers.
“I’m extremely happy with our overall effort today. We featured balanced scoring, shut-off their top two scoring options, posted a huge margin in groundballs and were very physical,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Ryan Gunzinger. “I also thought that McDonald and Knezick did a great job in the goal today and that defensively we were effective clearing the ball. Now we’ve got to build on this momentum down the stretch to make a run at a play-off bid.”
Cobleskill will next be in action on Thursday April 17th when they host the Broncos of SUNY Delhi for a Mountain Valley Conference contest with face-off scheduled for 4:00 PM at the Cobleskill Lacrosse Complex. |
