FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER BLASTS CANNONEERS 9-0
With the NJCAA Region III Tournament right around corner the SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team sent the tournament selection committee a powerful message by blasting the visiting Cannoneers of Jefferson Community College by a 9-0 margin on Saturday in waterlogged Cobleskill, NY. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 7-5-1 and secure their first winning season since the 2000 campaign.
“I’m glad that the weather didn’t have the effect on our offense that I thought that it would and with three games coming up over the next four days I was glad that we got a chance to play everyone on the roster,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “I give a lot of credit to our midfield for controlling play and limiting the Jefferson chances which in turn made our defense very effective.”
Leading the attack for Cobleskill was freshman midfielder Don Harrison, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, who blistered the Jefferson defense for two goals and three assists on the afternoon. Senior forward Mike Brower, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, also scored two goals in the victory for the Fighting Tigers while senior forward Bill Edsell, St. James, NY, Smithtown High School, chipped in one goal and an assist on the afternoon. Freshman defenseman Christian Velasquez, Woodside, NY, Francis Lewis High School, also played a major part his team’s success with three assists in the contest as did freshman defender Josh Cookfair, Scotia, NY, Schalmont High School, who passed out two assists on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers also received scoring efforts from senior midfielder Devin Stickle, Downsville, NY, Downsville High School, senior midfielder Travis White, Sidney, NY, Sidney High School, and senior defender Kyle Johannsen, Mohawk, NY, Mohawk High School, who each tallied a goal in the victory. Freshman striker Hugh Campbell, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, senior midfielder Carlos Perez, Flushing, NY, Robert F. Kennedy High School, and freshman forward Jose Rivera, Bronx, NY, Adlai E. Stevenson High School, each added an assist in the contest.
Once again Cobleskill goalkeeper senior Scott Bergen, Schenectady, NY, Mohonasen High School, directed the Fighting Tiger defense to perfection recording four saves and limiting the Cannoneers to only six shots and three corner kicks over the course of the game to post the shutout victory.
The Fighting Tigers will next travel to Glens Falls, NY, to meet the Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College in their final Mountain Valley Conference game of the season on Monday October 17th to make up a contest that has been twice postponed because of inclement weather conditions. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
