FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER BLANKS ADIRONDACK COMMUNITY COLLEGE 5-0
After having their game versus Adirondack Community College postponed twice due to weather the SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team took an important step towards an NJCAA Region III Tournament bid yesterday totally dominating the host Timberwolves by a 5-0 margin in Glens Falls, NY. The Fighting Tigers out shot their host by a 44-1 margin in the victory which pushes the Cobleskill overall mark to 8-5-1 on the year and closes out the team’s Mountain Valley Conference record at 3-3-1 on the season.
“We came out very hard as evidenced by the 5-0 halftime score which given the fact that due to recent weather conditions we have to play tomorrow at Broome made me glad to have the opportunity to give some of our key players the opportunity to rest,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “I’m really proud of our team for playing hard and not thinking about the regional play-off picture prematurely. In particular I was very impressed with the way Ken Day capitalized on two of the three quality scoring opportunities he had. That’s a percentage I’ll take in soccer anytime.”
Freshman midfielder Ken Day, Mechanicville, NY, Mechanicville High School, led the way for the potent Fighting Tiger attack with two goals in the contest while senior midfielder Devin Stickle, Downsville, NY, Downsville High School, freshman defender Christian Velasquez, Woodside, NY, Francis Lewis High School, and senior midfielder Travis White, Sidney, NY, Sidney High School, each scored a goal and added an assist in the victory. Freshman midfielder Gilbert Francillon, Brooklyn, NY, Midwood High School, also had two assists for Cobleskill in the victory.
Freshman Joe Adamiak, White Plains, NY, White Plains High School, got credit for the shutout stopping the lone Timberwolf shot on goal but in actuality the Fighting Tiger defensive unit and midfielders did not allow Adirondack many trips to the Cobleskill side of the field in the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will conclude the regular season traveling to Binghamton, NY on Tuesday October 18th to meet the Hornets of Broome Community College in a game that will have significant play-off ramifications for both squads beginning at 4:00 PM. The 2005 NJCAA Region III Tournament pairings will be announced on Thursday October 20th.
