SUNY COBLESKILL MEN’S SOCCER AWARDED REGION III HOME PLAY-OFF GAME
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer program has been awarded the eighth seed for the 2005 NJCAA Region III Division III Championship Tournament by the tournament’s selection committee. The Fighting Tigers posted a 9-5-1 overall record on the season and will now host the tournament’s number nine seeded team the Hornets of Broome Community College on Saturday October 22nd at the SUNY Cobleskill Soccer Complex beginning at 1:00 PM. The Hornets will enter the contest with a 10-7 overall record. The Fighting Tigers defeated the Hornets in Binghamton, NY this past Monday by a 3-2 margin in overtime.
“I think it’s an exciting time to be a part of the SUNY Cobleskill soccer program,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “I think that it is safe to say that our program has entered a transitional phase towards the upper echelon of the region and that this is evidenced by our being awarded a home game in the play-offs.”
The winner of Saturday’s contests will travel to Herkimer, NY on Tuesday October 25th to the tournament’s quarterfinal round to meet the number one seed the Generals of Herkimer Community College who are currently ranked first in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll with a 16-1 overall record including a perfect 14-0 overall mark against Region III Division III competition. The winner of Tuesday’s contest will advance to the tournament’s semi-final and championship rounds hosted by Herkimer Community College on Saturday October 29th and Sunday October 30th.
The Fighting Tigers will be making their first NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament appearance since the 2000 season when they advanced to the tournament’s semi-final round and posted a 12-4-1 overall record.
