FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER BLANKS NORTH COUNTRY 3-0 MOVES RECORD TO 9-1 ON SEASON
The Saints of North Country Community College came marching into Cobleskill, NY on Saturday for a meeting with the nationally ranked SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team. The Fighting Tigers offered little quarter to their visitors out-shooting the Saints by a 33 to one margin on their way to a 3-0 victory. Cobleskill is currently ranked fifteenth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
“We certainly wish that we would have converted more opportunities today but with that said anytime you get a regional win it is usually a tough one,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “Our defense continued to play stellar posting our third consecutive shutout and our sixth of the season. I also thought that we did a lot of the small things that usually don’t show up in a box score right today which usually leads to getting the job done.”
The Cobleskill defense turned offensive as senior defender Josh Cookfair, Scotia, NY, Schalmont High School, tallied first for the Fighting Tigers unassisted with 37:16 remaining in the opening half. Senior forward Hugh Campbell, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, then took a cross from senior defender Christian Velasquez, Woodside, NY, Francis Lewis High School, and found the back of the net with 20:17 remaining in the half. Freshman defender Menesky Magloire, Brooklyn, NY, Clara Barton High School, closed the scoring in the second half converting in spectacular fashion from long range with 23:41 remaining in regulation.
Freshman goalkeeper Abdou Seck, Bronx, NY, Dewitt Clinton High School, had to make only one save in the contest but did an excellent job of positioning the Fighting Tigers defensive troops to notch his third shutout of the week. To date the Cobleskill defense has allowed only seven goals in 10 games for a 0.70 goals against average.
The Fighting Tigers take to the road on Monday when they travel to Batavia, NY to meet number fourteen ranked Genesee Community College on the Cougars home turf. The Cougars are currently 8-1-1 on the season going into the contest. |
