FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER CLAWS BY HOST CLINTON COUGARS 1-0
“Cobleskill is the best team we’ve seen so far. They’re a very talented group with a lot of potent attackers,”
Eric Arnold Head Coach Clinton Community College.
One of the major complaints about the soccer in the United States among sports fans is that there is not enough scoring in the game. After his Fighting Tigers dominated play versus Clinton Community College on Saturday and came away with only a 1-0 victory, despite out shooting the host Cougars 33-2 on the home team’s undersized field, SUNY Cobleskill Head Coach Rob Szmarz might be inclined to agree with them. However with the game in the win column and his Fighting Tigers sitting on the high side of a 2-1 overall record Szmarz was philosophical about the outcome.
“The small field and their decision to pack in the goal area led to a distortion of the game of soccer and although our shot to goal percentage was low, we were able to move the ball at will and control the tempo of the game,” said the Fighting Tiger mentor. “It really took an outstanding shot from Essaha Jallow to overcome Clinton’s crafty style of defensive play on their home turf. On our defensive end, you certainly have to congratulate Abdou Seck on his play notching his first career shutout at the college level.”
With 19:02 remaining in regulation it was freshman midfielder Essaha Jallow, Bronx, NY, Dewitt Clinton High School, taking a pass from his fellow freshman teammate Steve Stewart, Middleburgh, NY, Middleburgh High School, and beating Clinton goalie Wes Studley that provided the winning margin for the Fighting Tigers. That was all Jallow’s fellow Dewitt Clinton High School alumnus freshman goalkeeper Abdou Seck, Bronx, NY, Dewitt Clinton High School, required to shut down the home team making saves on both of the Cougars’ shot attempts.
Cobleskill will return to action on Monday September 11th at 4:00 PM when they host SUNY Delhi at the Cobleskill Soccer Complex for the Fighting Tigers opening Mountain Valley Conference contest of the year.
