FIGHTING TIGERS’ CAMPBELL EARNS 2006 NSCAA/ADIDAS® JUNIOR COLLEGE DIVISION III SOCCER ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in conjunction with the Adidas Corporation announced today that SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team member senior Hugh Campbell, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, has been named to the 2006 NSCAA Division III All-American Second Team. The dynamic striker led the Fighting Tigers to the best season in program history with a 15-2-1 overall record, an .861 winning percentage, and to the runner-up position in the 2006 NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament. It marked the latest in a string of post season honors for Campbell who was earlier named as a First Team NJCAA All-American as well as to the: NSCAA Junior College Division III All-East Region First Team, the NJCAA All-Region III First Team and to the Mountain Valley Conference First Team. He becomes the first player in Fighting Tiger program history to earn NSCAA/Adidas All-American honors.
The Evander Childs High School alumnus proved to be an explosive offensive force for the Fighting Tigers scoring 13 goals and passing six assists on the year to lead the team in scoring with 32 total points. He closes his Cobleskill career with 21 goals and 12 assists for a career total of 54 points. He was the program’s leading scorer during both of his seasons with the Orange & Black.
“It is truly a great honor to be named as an All-American and I am extremely proud of Hugh for everything that he’s done for our program,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “As a player he is a physical presence, who possesses the: size, speed and ball control skills that enable him to have his way with opposing defenders. Moreover, Hugh is a self motivated person who is going to be very successful in life.”
Since taking the helm of the program four years ago, Head Coach Rob Szmarz’s teams have returned the Fighting Tiger program to national prominence by posting a 35-25-4 overall record advancing to post season play in 2005 and 2006. The Cobleskill mentor was named both the 2006 NJCAA Region III Division III Coach-of-the-Year and 2006 Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year by his peers. Cobleskill closed the 2006 season ranked ninth overall in the NJCAA Division III Final National Poll.
