FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER DOWNS DELHI 1-0 IN MVC PLAY
On a rain swept field in Delhi, NY one of the oldest rivalries in junior college soccer played out as a pair of long-time rivals and undefeated Mountain Valley Conference combatants met as the NJCAA number nine ranked Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill out battled the host Broncos of SUNY Delhi by a 1-0 margin. The victory boosts the Fighting Tiger season record to 5-0 on the year with a 2-0 mark versus league opponents while SUNY Delhi falls to 2-1 and 0-1 on the year.
The low scoring, hard hitting defensive affair was decided when Cobleskill freshman midfielder Cedric Bouemboue, Brooklyn, NY, Aviation High School, scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out with 35 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the second half. Bouemboue set up for the kick on the left side and curled a ball over a wall of players into the upper corner of the net to give the visiting Fighting Tigers the victory over their archrivals.
“We try to reiterate to ourselves that every regional game is a battle and beyond that; we play in the toughest conference in the nation at our level, so every conference game is a war. Now make the game you’re playing, Cobleskill and Delhi and you have all of the ingredients for a hard fought great soccer match,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “That was an extremely well coached, highly disciplined Delhi team that really got under our skin and pushed us to the limit. This is the type of game that we will learn from and build off of in the future.”
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday September 13th when they travel to Troy, NY to take on the Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 PM. |
