FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER RANKED 2nd IN NJCAA NATIONAL POLL
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer program has moved up to the number two position in the current NJCAA Division III National Poll. This represents a move up from the number four ranking in last week’s national poll. Cobleskill is currently unbeaten at 7-0 on the year and tied for first place in the Mountain Valley Conference with a perfect 4-0 league record.
“It feels good to be moving up in the rankings like this,” said fifth-year Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “We know that the most important thing we must accomplish is be able to peak at the end of the season come play-off time so right now we are going to do is take things day-by-day and as usual our most important game of the season is going to be our next one.”
On offensive, senior midfielder Essaha Jallow, Bronx, NY, Dewitt Clinton High School, and freshman forward Kwame Sarpong, Bronx, NY, Beacon High School have been a potent scoring punch as Jallow has scored five goals to go with an assists on the year while Sarpong has also notched five goals and posted one assist on the season to date. Freshman forward Emile Barnett, Huntington, NY, John Glen High School, has also been a strong factor in the team’s success scoring four goals for the Orange & Black and has been joined as a factor offensively by freshman midfielder Cedric Bouemboue, Brooklyn, NY, Aviation High School who has contributed two goals and three assists on the year.
In the nets, freshman goalkeeper Corey Lewis, Plattsburgh, NY, Chazy High School, was recently named the NJCAA Region III Division III Male-Athlete-of-the-Week for posting two consecutive shutout road victories, 1-0 over SUNY Delhi and 1-0 in overtime versus Hudson Valley Community College in Mountain Valley Conference play, to lead a defense that has allowed only three goals on the season and shut out opponents four times this year to date.
Cobleskill will next be in action on Friday September 21st when they return to the friendly confines of the Cobleskill Soccer Complex to meet the Albany College of Pharmacy for a non-conference/non-regional match with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
