CORNELL NAMED 2004 SUNY COBLESKILL HUGH D. GRACE AWARD RECIPIENT
SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team member Rob Cornell, Hamilton, NY, Hamilton High School, has been named the 2004 recipient of the athletic program’s Hugh D. Grace Award for sportsmanship. The award was presented to Cornell at the college’s recent annual Athletic Awards Convocation.
The Grace Award is given to the Fighting Tiger senior male student/athlete who by his action on the playing field, in the classroom and in the campus community has exemplified the code of sportsmanship and leadership.
The Hamilton, NY native was a two-year starter for the Fighting Tiger men’s soccer program and the anchor of the team’s defensive unit. Fighting Tiger Head Soccer Coach Rob Szmarz referred to Cornell as the team’s quiet leader both on and off the field over the course of the season and throughout his Fighting Tiger career.
The award is presented yearly in honor of the late Hugh D. Grace a member of the Cobleskill Class of 1949 who was a standout member of the basketball and baseball programs and a member of the college’s student council. Grace was tragically killed during the Korean War and the award has been presented in his honor since.
