COBLESKILL MEN’S SOCCER TOPS JAMESTOWN CC 4-1 AT ALFRED CLASSIC
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team flexed their offensive muscle on Sunday defeating Jamestown Community College by a 4-1 margin at the Alfred State College “Pioneer Classic” over the weekend in Alfred, NY. The only thing that stopped the Fighting Tiger attack during the tournament was the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto which dumped over two inches of rain on Alfred, NY and forced the cancellation of the Classic’s Saturday schedule. The dominant Cobleskill offense out shot their Jayhawk opponents by a 33-2 margin and attempted 13 corner-kicks to none for the opposition.
“We weren’t dealt a very good hand weather wise by Mother Nature but we won comfortably and escaped without any injuries,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “Through the muddy and rainy conditions we were able to have our forwards linkup with the rest of our team which led to a plethora of scoring opportunities. I was very pleased with today’s outcome given the conditions.”
The Fighting Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead courtesy of senior forward Hugh Campbell, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, who led the way scoring twice on the afternoon during the opening stanza while freshman forward Jamey Crumb, McGraw, NY, McGraw High School, added a goal to go with two assists in the game. Freshman forward Austin Stanhardt, Schoharie, NY, Middleburgh High School, closed out the scoring for Cobleskill in the second half notching the first goal of his collegiate career. Also playing a major role offensively was freshman midfielder Rilwan Salawu, Brooklyn, NY, Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, who assisted on two Fighting Tiger goals with precision feeds to his teammates.
With defending NJCAA National Champion Herkimer Community College looming on the horizon for his Fighting Tigers coach Szmarz pointed out the importance of the contest.
“As always this will be one of the most important games of the season for us and we look forward to getting out on the field in Herkimer on Tuesday night and mixing it up with them.”
The Fighting Tigers will travel to Herkimer, NY on Tuesday September 4th to meet the Generals beginning at 7:00 PM.
