FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER RIPS CLINTON COUGARS 4-1
Perhaps SUNY Cobleskill Head Men’s Soccer Coach Rob Szmarz summed up his team’s decisive 4-1 victory over visiting Clinton Community College on Saturday at the Cobleskill Soccer Complex best by saying, “It was nice to turn quality possessions into goals for a change.” After a season of near misses and squandered opportunities the Fighting Tigers blistered the Clinton net for four goals to drop the Cougars to 0-3-1 on the season. Cobleskill now moves to 2-3 on the year.
The Fighting Tigers dominated play out shooting their guest by a 26 to 10 margin allowing the lone Cougar goal on a highly controversial penalty kick late in the second half. The Cobleskill goalie tandem of senior Scott Bergen, Schenectady, NY, Mohonasen High School, and freshman Joe Adamiak, White Plains, NY, White Plains High School, stopped nine shots with Bergen recording six saves and Adamiak making three. The Cobleskill defensive effort drew great praise from coach Szmarz.
“Our starters did a great job of getting organized defensively and we did not give them many quality offensive chances. I was extremely pleased with our effort and execution on the defensive side of the field,” said the Fighting Tiger mentor.
On the offensive end of the field Cobleskill received strong scoring freshman Don Harrison, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, and freshman Tom Wickham, Broadalbin, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, who each tallied a goal and an assist in the contest. Senior William Edsell, Smithtown, NY, Smithtown High School, and senior Carlos Perez, Queens, NY, Robert F. Kennedy High School, also each tallied a goal in the victory. The Fighting Tigers also had senior Kyle Johanssen, Mohawk, NY, Mohawk High School, freshman Christian Velasquez, Woodside, NY, Francis Lewis High School, and freshman Gilbert, Francillon, Brooklyn, NY, Midwood High School, post assists in the contest.
The Fighting Tigers next travel to Delhi, NY, on Monday September 12th for a meeting with Mountain Valley Conference rival Delhi Tech beginning at 4:00 PM.
