COBLESKILL MEN’S SOCCER TIES DELHI TECH 1-1 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
It was everything that a soccer purest dislikes about the way the game has evolved. It was a physical slow paced grind-it-out contest which substituted physicality for flow and artistic beauty. However for the SUNY Cobleskill and Delhi Tech men’s soccer teams it was just another chapter in a rivalry that has gone on for over a half century. When the horn finally sounded the Fighting Tigers and the Broncos had played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime on the Broncos home field in Delhi, NY. With the tie the Fighting Tigers move to 2-3-1 over all on the season with a 0-1-1 mark in Mountain Valley Conference play.
“We definitely had to fight to earn a tie on the road and that’s understandable because any time we play Delhi here that’s the case,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “I’m proud of our guys for finding their niche after the first 15 minutes of play and demonstrating the type of soccer that Cobleskill is capable of playing.”
Once again the Fighting Tiger offense had ample opportunities putting 23 shots on the Delhi net. Finally with 23:40 remaining in the second period senior midfielder Devon Stickle, Downsville, NY, Downsville High School, scored on a soft, well-placed 30 yard bloop shot. Regrettably for Cobleskill the Broncos evened the score only 40 seconds later on a goal by Josh Crawford. After two overtime periods the issue remained knotted at 1-1 thus ending the contest in a tie.
Fighting Tiger senior goalkeeper Scott Bergen, Schenectady, NY, Mohonasen High School, stopped five Bronco shots on goal while directing the Cobleskill defense from the net. The defensive unit was once again solid throughout the contest limiting the Broncos to only seven shots on goal and four corner kicks over the course of the game.
The Fighting Tigers will next continue their road swing traveling to Troy, NY for a Mountain Valley Conference meeting with the Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
