FIGHTING TIGERS MAUL NORTH COUNTRY SAINTS 6-1 IN MEN’S SOCCER
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer program extended their current unbeaten streak to five games on Saturday after traveling to Saranac Lake, NY to defeat the Saints of North Country Community College by a 6-1 score. Leading 2-0 at the half the Fighting Tigers exploded for four second half goals to put the game out of reach of their hosts. Cobleskill improves its overall record to 5-3-1 on the year with the victory.
“The score at half time was not indicative of the game because both teams had long stretches of possession and quality scoring opportunities,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Rob Szmarz. “In the second half we really stepped up the level of our game and put four goals on the score board. North Country gave us problems early and I’m proud of our team for keeping them off the scoreboard when the game hung in the balance. This was an important victory for us to have as we start to look at a potential play-off bid.”
Freshman striker Hugh Campbell, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, led the potent Fighting Tiger offensive attack with two goals on the afternoon while senior midfielders Devin Stickle, Downsville, NY, Downsville High School, and Carlos Perez, Flushing, NY, John F. Kennedy High School, each added a goal and an assist in the win as did senior forward Mike Brower, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School. Freshman defender Matt Graham, Spring Valley, NY, Martin Luther King High School, also posted a goal in the contest for Cobleskill.
Also contributing on offense for Cobleskill was midfielder freshman Don Harrison, Bronx, NY, Evander Childs High School, with two assists while senior midfielder Justin Hines, Philmont, NY, Taconic Hills High School, freshman defender Josh Cookfair, Scotia, NY, Schalmont High School, and freshman defender Christian Velasquez, Woodside, NY, Francis Lewis High School, each tallied an assist in the game.
In the Cobleskill nets, freshman goalkeeper Joe Adamiak, White Plains, NY, White Plains High School, posted his first collegiate victory stopping seven Saint shot attempts and positioning the Fighting Tiger defense throughout the game from his vantage point in the goalmouth.
The Fighting Tigers continue their extended road swing on Monday September 26th when they travel to Utica, NY to meet the Hawks of Mohawk Valley Community College for a Mountain Valley Conference contested slated to begin at 4:00 PM at the Mohawk Valley campus soccer field.
