Head Coach Mary Irving took over the Fighting Tiger program in the fall of 2002 and made an immediate splash leading the Fighting Tiger men to the 2003 Mountain Valley Conference Championship and earning Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year recognition in the process. The Fighting Tiger men subsequently won the Mountain Valley Conference meet in 2004 and 2005 while the Fighting Tiger women captured a conference title in 2004 under her direction. During her tenure as head coach Fighting Tiger individuals have won 30 conference individual event titles and five relay conference titles. Coach Irving has been named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year on the men's side three times and once with the women's program.
On the regional level the Fighting Tigers under coach Irving have had two men's NJCAA Northeastern District individual event champions. Cobleskill has produced six NJCAA All-American Relay teams during her time heading the program while individually, Heather Frees, Johnstown, NY, and Justin Dufel, Fonda, NY, each were honored as a three-time NJCAA All-Americans under her direction. In 2004, Cobleskill placed 8th overall at the NJCAA National Championship meet the highest finish of any non-scholarship program in the event.
A native of Rensselaer, NY, Irving graduated from Rensselaer Junior/Senior High School in 1983 moving on to Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences/Physical Education in 1985. While at Hudson Valley, Irving was a member of the women’s basketball and softball programs.
Irving continued her education at SUNY Cortland in Cortland, NY where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1987. She earned her National Athletic Training Association Certification through SUNY Brockport in Brockport, NY in 1990. Irving would later earn her Master’s Degree in Recreation Administration through George Williams College/Aurora University in Aurora, IL in 1998.
She started her professional career in 1990 at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY as Assistant Athletic Trainer. She moved to St. John Fisher in 1991 as Head Athletic Trainer/Head Equipment Manager and stayed until 1999 when she became SUNY Cobleskill’s Head Trainer.
Irving also serves as SUNY Cobleskill’s Associate Director of Athletics and instructs courses in the college's Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Studies program. |
