FIGHTING TIGER TENNIS BLANKS ADIRONDACK COMMUNITY COLLEGE 9-0
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team pounded upstart Adirondack Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action by a 9-0 margin at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex yesterday afternoon. The victory evens the Fighting Tigers’ overall record to 2-2 on the season while the Timberwolves fall to 0-1 on the year after a several season hiatus from varsity competition.
“Our confidence was up especially on the lower flights and in doubles play. As a matter of fact this was the first time in my tenure as head coach that we’ve swept doubles play,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “Our entire team was focused on doing all of the necessary things to put this one in the win column. It’s now time to use this momentum to get things going in the right direction as we head into the stretch drive.”
Once again defending NJCAA Region III Champion senior Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamsville North High School, was exceedingly efficient at the number one singles slot taking his match by perfect scores of 6-0 and 6-0 while senior Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, captured the number two singles slot by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. The senior duo also posted a decisive win at the number one doubles position winning their match by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
Freshman John Hazelton, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, took the number three singles slot by scores of 6-1 and 6-1 then teamed with fellow freshman Greg Klopfer, Voorheesville, NY, Voorheesville High School, to dominate at the number two doubles spot by scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Klopfer early delivered the Fighting Tigers a win at number four singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
Cobleskill was equally impressive at the number five singles spot where freshman Andy Crane, Exeter, ME, Dexter Regional High School, won 7-5 and 6-1 and at the number six singles position where senior Ashok Ramani, Valatie, NY, Ichabod Crane High School, won handily by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Crane and Ramani then teamed to complete the Cobleskill sweep by taking the third doubles spot by identical scores of 6-4 and 6-4.
