FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S TENNIS DOWNS DELHI TECH 8-1 IN MVC ACTION
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team used their home court advantage to its utmost on Thursday afternoon posting a decisive 8-1 victory over the visiting Broncos of Delhi Tech in a Mountain Valley Conference match at the college’s Cobleskill Tennis Complex. The victory pushed the Fighting Tigers’ overall record to 3-2 on the season with a 2-1 mark versus league competition.
Fighting Tiger number two singles senior Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, rallied back after dropping the first set by a 6-3 margin to take the next two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Steiner then teamed at first doubles with senior Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamsville North High School, to take their match by a score of 8-0 in a Pro-set. Weiss, the defending NJCAA Region III first singles champion, continued his impressive play winning his match by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
Cobleskill was also impressive at the number three singles where freshman John Hazelton, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, won by scores of 6-1 and 6-1 while freshman Andy Crane, Exeter, ME, Dexter Regional High School, came back to win the first set 7-6 (7-2) and 6-1. The Orange & Black then took the number three doubles slot where Crane teamed with freshman Greg Klopfer, Voorheesville, NY, Voorheesville High School, posted an 8-4 victory in a Pro-set. The Fighting Tigers captured the number four singles and number two doubles via injury forfeits for the final margin of victory.
“I can’t say enough good things about Andy Steiner today,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “Andy showed great heart and determination and was the catalyst in this victory which we needed on a number of different levels. We haven’t been the healthiest team lately but at this time of the year you have to play through all of the bumps and bruises and get tough. We’ve got some important matches just over the horizon and this gives us some much needed momentum heading into the stretch drive.”
The Fighting Tigers will travel to Binghamton, NY on Saturday April 21st to meet the Hornets of Broome Community College for a NJCAA Region III match-up beginning at 1:00 PM. |
