COBLESKILL’S WEISS SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER-OF-INTENT TO NCAA DIVISION II UNIVERSITY OFCHARLESTON
SUNY Cobleskill Head Men’s Tennis Coach Scott Hill announced today Fighting Tiger team captain Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamson North High School, has signed an NCAA National Letter-of-Intent to accept an athletic scholarship to NCAA Division II member institution University Of Charleston in Charleston, WV. Charleston University is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and this past season posted a 7-14 overall record with a 4-4 mark in conference play losing in the opening round of the conference tournament.
Playing at the number one singles position for the Fighting Tigers Weiss was a two-time All-Mountain Valley Conference Team selection. This season the Williamson North High School alumnus dominated the first singles position in league play posting a 4-0 mark in while finishing the season with a 7-1 overall regular season record. During his Fighting Tiger career the Getzville, NY resident posted a perfect 8-0 record versus MVC opponents during his two years with the Orange & Black. He became the program’s first regional champion during his freshman year capturing the 2006 NJCAA Region III First Singles Championship in 2006 advancing to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament where he lost in the opening round. This season he finished as the NJCAA Region III Runner-up at the first singles position.
“We are extremely proud of what Steve has accomplished during his time with us and clearly he has played a major role in our improvement as a program,” said Coach Scott Hill. “I am certain that he can be a major contributor immediately to the University of Charleston program and that his best tennis is still ahead of him. It has been a pleasure to work with him these past two years and I have not doubts that he will be a successful person whatever he commits himself to in the future.”
During Head Coach Scott Hill’s two-year tenure at the helm, the Fighting Tigers have compiled a 12-5 overall record and have qualified for regional competition twice. In 2006 the program captured its first Mountain Valley Conference Championship in program history under his direction earning the Fighting Tiger mentor Mountain Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors. During Hill’s leadership Fighting Tiger players have earned: nine All-Mountain Valley Conference Team and one All-NJCAA Region III Team honors.
