FOUR FIGHTING TIGERS NAMED TO 2007ALL-MOUNTAIN VALLEY CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS TEAM
Four members of the SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team have been named to the 2007 All-Mountain Valley Conference Team. Senior first singles Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamson North High School, senior second singles Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, were honored by the league for the second consecutive season while freshman third singles Jon Hazelton, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, and freshman Greg Klopfer, Voorheesville, NY, Voorheesville High School, earn all-conference honors for the first time with the Fighting Tigers. Cobleskill concluded the year with a 5-3 overall record placing second in the conference standings with a 3-1 overall mark in league play. The program also made its second straight appearance at the NJCAA Region III Division III Championship Tournament finishing third overall, the best finish for Fighting Tiger tennis at the event in over a decade.
During the season Steve Weiss dominated the first singles position in league play posting a 4-0 mark in while finishing the season with a 7-1 overall regular season record. During his Fighting Tiger career the Getzville, NY resident posted a perfect 8-0 record versus MVC opponents during his two years with the Orange & Black. Weiss became the program’s first regional champion during his freshman year capturing the 2006 NJCAA Region III First Singles Championship in 2006 advancing to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament where he lost in the opening round. This season he finished as the Region III runner-up at the first singles position.
Senior Andy Steiner was an impressive force over the past two seasons for the Fighting Tigers at the second singles spot this year posting a 4-0 mark versus league opponents as part of a 6-2 overall record. Steiner also closed his Cobleskill career with a perfect 8-0 two-year tally versus MVC opponents. During his tenure with the program the Perry High School alumnus twice finished as the NJCAA Region III Tournament runner-up at the second singles position.
Rookie Jon Hazelton exploded onto the scene in 2007 posting a 3-1 mark at the number three singles spot versus conference competition for the Fighting Tigers. The Greenville, NY native closed the year with a 6-2 overall record and finished as the regional runner-up at the NJCAA Region III Championship Tournament.
Rounding out the Cobleskill All-Mountain Valley Conference contingent was number four singles Greg Kopfer who posted a perfect 4-0 mark versus league competition during the season. The Voorheesville High School alumnus finished the season with a 6-2 overall record on the year.
“This was another successful season for our program and the contributions of these young men played a major role in that success,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “Steve Weiss and Andy Steiner will be greatly missed next year not only because of their tennis but because of their strong work ethic. They have helped us lay a foundation on which we intend to continue to build on. Jon Hazelton and Greg Klopfer will be the people that we’re going to look to for the leadership and competitiveness to take us to the next level building off that foundation. As a coach, I am extremely proud of these young men and truly feel that they are prime examples of what collegiate student-athletes should aspire to be like.”
During Head Coach Scott Hill’s two-year tenure at the helm, the Fighting Tigers have compiled a 12-5 overall record and have qualified for regional competition twice. Under Hill’s tutelage Fighting Tiger players have earned: nine All-Mountain Valley Conference Team and one All-NJCAA Region III Team honors. |
