Much like TNT Network the SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team; “knows drama”, as the Fighting Tigers posted an upset 5-4 victory over the Onondaga Community College Lazers yesterday afternoon at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex. The Lazers had placed fifth at the 2005 NJCAA Division III Championships and had defeated Cobleskill in every meeting between the two programs since the 1996 season. With the victory the Fighting Tigers push their overall record to 3-2 on the season while posting their second win over a 2005 NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament qualifier.
With the match tied at 4-4 the Fighting Tiger number three doubles team of freshman Perry Gould, Cortlandt Manor, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, and senior Jason Friedman, Dobbs Ferry, NY, Carmel High School, dominated their match from start to finish posting a 10-1 victory in the twilight to decide the outcome.
“This is clearly one of the biggest victories our program has had in a number of years and I’m very proud of our team’s effort and execution today,” said first-year Head Coach Scott Hill. “But we can’t rest on our laurels if we want to be playing in the regional tournament. This was a great victory for us but tomorrow we have Delhi and we need a win to keep things moving in the right direction.”
The Fighting Tigers captured four singles seeds in the match led by freshman number one singles Steve Weis, Getzville, NY, Williamsville North High School, who moved his overall record to 4-1 on the season by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
