FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S TENNIS DOWNS DELHI TECH 6-3
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team continued their winning ways on Wednesday taking to the court to defeat visiting Delhi Tech by a 6-3 margin in a non-conference meeting at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 4-2 on the season and put themselves in position to challenge for an NJCAA Region III Championship Tournament bid for the first time since the 2000 season.
The Fighting Tigers dominated singles play taking five of the six singles matches led by freshman Steve Weis, Getzville, NY, Williamsville North High School, who captured his match at first singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 while fellow freshman second singles Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, won his match by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Senior captain Derek Norberg, Middleburgh, NY, Middleburgh High School, dominated the number three singles spot by scores of 6-0 and 6-3 then teamed at the number two singles spot with freshman Mike Hooker, Cicero, NY, Cicero-North Syracuse High School, to win by an 8-6 margin. Hooker earlier battled to a three set victory for the second straight day by scores of 6-4, 5-7 and 6-0. Cobleskill closed out the match with a victory at the number six singles spot as senior Justin Friedman, Bedford Hills, NY, Carmel High School, came off the disabled list to win in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
“Coming off the big win we had on Tuesday over Onondaga; I was concerned, about a possible let down,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “But that never materialized and I think the thing that we demonstrated today is that we are a team that is extremely competitive every time we take the court. This team likes to win, plays to win and does what’s necessary to win. That’s what makes it a different team than Cobleskill teams of the past few years. Now we’ve got to get ready for next week because the schedule doesn’t get any easier.”
Cobleskill returns to action on Tuesday April 18th when they host Mountain Valley Conference rival Mohawk Valley Community College at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex beginning at 4:00 PM. |
