SUNY COBLESKILL & USTA TO HOST SUMMER TENNIS PROGRAM

SUNY Cobleskill and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) will be sponsoring a tennis promotional program at the college’s tennis complex on Wednesday evenings throughout this summer. The program dubbed “The Wednesday Night Hitting Club” will be open to people of all ages and skill levels and will feature tennis instruction by SUNY Cobleskill Head Tennis Coach John Tassone, rally games and open play.

The program will meet every Wednesday from June 1st thru August 10th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the SUNY Cobleskill Tennis Complex. In the event of inclement weather the program will be moved to the college’s indoor courts. The cost to the public will be $5 per session per person.

“We’re looking forward to hosting this program as well as several other events this summer with the goal of promoting the growth of tennis to this part of the Capital Region,” said Coach Tassone. “This will be a great opportunity for people of all ages and ability levels to come out, play, work on their games, get some exercise and meet some fellow tennis enthusiasts. We’re really excited about bringing the tennis community in this area together at our facilities.”

SUNY Cobleskill is a USTA accredited college teaching program and was honored this past year as the USTA/Eastern District Collegiate Award recipient as the top USTA/Eastern District’s college teaching program. The honor is presented to Cobleskill for the exceptional job of endeavoring to “promote and grow the game of tennis” in this area during the year. This was the second time that the college has received the honor having been previously honored by the association in 2002. In January of 2001 SUNY Cobleskill became the first college in northern New York to be certified as a member of the United States Tennis Association’s College Program. The USTA is the governing body of tennis in the USA administering competitive, educational and professional programs in the sport to a wide range of populations nationally. (This includes the overseeing of USA Wheelchair Tennis.) The USTA is also in charge of the operation of the United States Open Tournament one of professional tennis’s grand slam events.
