FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD PLACES 2ND AT NJCAA NATIONALS
For the third time in the last four years the SUNY Cobleskill women’s outdoor track & field team placed second at the 2008 NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by SUNY Delhi in Delhi, NY over the weekend. The Fighting Tigers scored 86 points to finish second place among 23 teams competing for the national title.
Five Fighting Tiger athletes earned First Team NJCAA All-American honors as the Cobleskill 4 X 400 Meter Relay of senior Jennifer Villanova, Clifton Park, NY, Shenendehowa High School, freshman Brittany Armstrong, Schenectady, NY, Mohonasen High School, senior Regina Morgan, Brooklyn, NY, Prospect Heights High School and freshman Tamarra Jenkins, Queens, NY, Jamaica High School, secured the team’s overall second place status in the meet’s final event by capturing the national title with a time of 4:16.39. Jennifer Villanova also earned First Team NJCAA All-American honors individually by winning the Pole Vault with a vault of 2.72 meters to go with scoring efforts in the: 400 Meter Hurdles with a third place finish in 1:13.14, a third place finish in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.09 meters and a fifth place finish in the Triple Jump with a mark of 9.86 meters.
Scoring individually for the Orange & Black in multiple events were: sprinter Regina Morgan who placed fourth in the 200 Meters in 26.88 seconds and fourth in the 400 Meters with a time of 1:02.99, senior distance runner April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, who placed fourth in the 3000 Meters Steeplechase in 12:24.27, seventh in the 10,000 Meters with at time of 43:10.31 and seventh in the 5000 Meters with a time of 19:42.81, and from freshman distance runner Meghan LaPoint, Schenectady, NY, Colonie High School, who placed third in the 1500 Meters in a time of 5:09.68 and fifth in the 10,000 Meters with a time of 42.12.94.
Cobleskill received additional individual solo scoring efforts from: senior thrower Kayla Evers, Oneonta, NY, Lighthouse Academy, who was fourth in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 33.70 meters, freshman distance runner Alex Devine, Cherry Plains, NY, Berlin High School, who placed eighth in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 13:14.42, senior distance runner Meghan Newton, Torrington, CT, Wamogo High School, who placed eighth in the 10,000 Meters with a time of 44:14.79 and freshman hurdler Megan Donahue, Colonie, NY, Colonie High School, who placed seventh in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:19.57. Sprinter Tamarra Jenkins also came back to score individually for the team placing fifth in the 400 Meters with a time of 1:04.17.
The Fighting Tiger scoring was rounded out in the relays as the Cobleskill 4 X 800 Meter Relay of Alex Devine, freshman Amy Cunningham, Durham, NY, Cairo-Durham High School, freshman Beth Tranes, Goshen, NY, Goshen High School, and freshman Angela
Villanova, Clifton Park, NY, Shenendehowa High School, placed sixth overall with a time of 10:50.97. The Cobleskill 4 X 100 Meter Relay of Jennifer Villanova, Brittany Armstrong , Tamarra Jenkins, and Regina Morgan also scored finishing in fifth place overall with a time of 54.10 seconds.
The Fighting Tigers had entered the championship meet ranked fourth in the year’s final NJCAA Division III National Poll.
