FIGHTING TIGER INDOOR TRACK & FIELD AT 2008 CORNELL INVITE
With a week to go before the NJCAA Region III Championships, the SUNY Cobleskill indoor track & field program journeyed to Ithaca, NY over the weekend to compete in the 2008 Cornell University Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Against an impressive field the Fighting Tigers continued to post program record setting performances.
Freshman sprinter Leon Thompson, Manhattan, NY, Fredrick Douglas Academy, was a major highlight for the men’s team setting a new program record in the 60 Meter Dash with a time of 7.13 seconds to earn a seventh place finish in the event.
Individually the Fighting Tigers received addition strong showings on the men’s side from: freshman multi-event performer Aldin Gomez, Westbury, NY, Westbury High School, who finished fifth in the Pentathlon with a score of 2918 points, freshman middle distance runner Emille Barnett, Huntington, NY, John Glenn High School, who placed sixth in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:00.76 and freshman middle distance runner Richard Garnett, Yonkers, NY, Roosevelt High School, who placed tenth in the 800 Meter Run in a time of 2:02.23.
On the women’s side the Fighting Tiger 4 X 800 Meter Relay of: freshman Beth Tranes, Goshen, NY, Goshen High School, freshman Tamarra Jenkins, Queens, NY, Jamaica High School, freshman Amy Cunningham, Durham, NY, Cairo-Durham High School, and freshman Meghan LaPoint, Schenectady, NY, Colonie High School, established a new program record in the event placing sixth on the day with a time of 11:20.89.
Of note individually, freshman distance runner Meghan Newton, Torrington, CT, Wamogo High School, met the NJCAA Division III Outdoor National Qualifying Standard in the 5000 Meter Run placing twentieth in the event with a time of 21:20.02. Athletes who meet NJCAA Outdoor Qualifying Standards during the indoor season after January 25th are recognized as outdoor national qualifiers by the association.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Friday February 15th when selected team members will compete at the Lafayette/Rider Game at the Armory in New York, NY. The complete Fighting Tiger squad will next compete at the 2008 NJCAA Region III Championships hosted at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY on Sunday February 17th beginning at 3:00 PM. |
