FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TAKES 2ND AT CAYUGA CC THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team split a pair of games to place second at the Cayuga Community College Thanksgiving Tournament in Auburn, NY over the weekend. The Fighting Tigers opened the tournament with a 57-43 win over Niagara Community College on Saturday then fell to the tournament’s host team Cayuga Community College on Sunday by a 54-50 margin. After the weekend’s festivities the Fighting Tigers are currently 7-1 overall on the season.
“I must be very clear about this, ‘there are no moral victories in college basketball’ we came here with the goal of winning this tournament not finishing in second place,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “However with that said, this was overall a very positive experience for us even though we did not play very well. The format is that you have to win to advance which is what you have to do in the regional tournament and this year’s Region III Tournament is at Cayuga so playing in this facility could be very important for us down the road.”
Senior point guard Tanisha McClinton, Poughkeepsie, NY, Poughkeepsie High School, and freshman shooting guard Erin O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, were each named to the All-Tournament Team for their play over the weekend. McClinton 9.5 points per contest while O’Rourke averaged 9.0 points per game over the two games.
On Saturday versus Niagara senior center Crystal Ferrer, Bronx, NY, Redemption Christian Academy, posted a double/double with 10 points and 14 rebounds with senior NJCAA All-American forward Dee Dee Smith, Monticello, NY, Redemption Christian Academy, going for eight points against Niagara and 16 points against Cayuga. Freshman forward Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, continued to be an inside force off the Fighting Tiger bench scoring seven points on Saturday and six points on Sunday. Freshman swing person Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, scored nine points in the Cobleskill loss to Cayuga on Sunday.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday November 29th when they travel to Binghamton, NY for a meeting with the Hornets of Broome Community College beginning at 6:00 PM.
