FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEVOURS ACC TIMBERWOLVES 87-41
Coming off a loss to number two ranked Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica on Monday, the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team entered Thursday night’s Mountain Valley Conference meeting with host Adirondack Community College in Glens Falls, NY in a very hungry mood. From the opening tip it was not pretty for Adirondack as the Fighting Tigers devoured the Timberwolves dominating every facet of the game in an 87-41 victory. With the win Cobleskill moves to13-2 on the season with a 4-1 mark in conference play. The Fighting Tigers are currently ranked ninth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
“A lot of people came to work tonight and we always seem to play well in this building,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Coming off break is like starting all over to an extent and we are experimenting with different substitution patterns. Given that we didn’t play a very strong team tonight we were able to give different people extended minutes and work on some different things we haven’t had a chance to cover in practice. I hope some people gained confidence through this game and that it will make us a better team in the long run.”
Freshman guard Erin O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, returned to her home area in style powering the Cobleskill attack with a 16 point, six rebound, six assist and three blocked shot effort on the evening while senior center Crystal Ferrer, Bronx, NY, Redemption Christian Academy, pounded the Timberwolves in the paint with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior NJCAA All-American forward Dee Dee Smith, Monticello, NY, Redemption Christian Academy, was also active in the route with a career high of 10 assists to go with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Fighting Tigers also received strong efforts from freshman forward Allyssa Markey, Warrensburg, NY, Warrensburg High School, who returned to her home area to post career highs in points and rebounds with 10 points and nine rebounds on the night and senior forward Tahara Pleasure, Albany, NY, Albany High School, who scored a career high of 10 points to go with five rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, added 14 points and six rebounds on the evening and fellow freshman Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, added six points and nine rebounds on the evening for the Fighting Tigers.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Saturday January 21st when they host the visiting Mustangs of Morrisville State College in Mountain Valley Conference play beginning at 1:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: The Fighting Tigers posted 31 assists on the evening against only 10 turnovers on the night. The 46 point margin of victory was Cobleskill’s largest of the season as was the 87 points scored. The Fighting Tigers number nine national ranking is the program’s first since the 1997 season.
