FIGHTING TIGER SHOOT DOWN RED BARONS 57-49 IN WOMEN’S B-BALL
The SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers women’s basketball team took to the road for the first time in the 2006 season journeying to Corning, NY on Saturday to post a 58-49 victory over the Red Barons of Corning Community College. The victory in the non-conference contest elevates the Cobleskill overall record to 3-0 on the season.
Despite working with a short bench due to injuries, illness and some athletes still in fall sports the Fighting Tigers were able to carry the fight to their hosts from the opening tip posting a 32-26 halftime lead. Senior power forward Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, pounded the Red Barons in the paint posting a double/double with 22 points and 11 rebounds on the day. Senior guard Erinn O’Rouke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, continued her strong play with 11 points to go with three rebounds and four steals while senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, poured in 11 points, passed out five assists and ran down four rebounds on the night. Cobleskill also received a strong showing from senior guard/forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, with seven points and seven rebounds and from senior forward Andrea Piedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School, with four points, four rebounds and three steals.
“I thought we went in and played a pretty good game today and showed a lot of heart when people had to play extended minutes due to foul trouble,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Once again today I think that we did a great job of dictating the tempo of the game and we attacked their match-up zone very effectively. We did a much better job of sharing the ball and getting everyone involved offensively. At one point we let a 13 point lead slip down to four points but then we showed great poise and did a nice job of rebuilding the lead and putting the game away. Now we’ll go to Finger Lakes and we should have 11 healthy players ready to go so things should get better for us in terms of our depth.”
Cobleskill will return to the hardwood on Tuesday November 14th when they travel to Canandaigua, NY to meet the Lakers of Finger Lakes Community College for a 7:00 PM contest.
