FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL POSTS 68-55 ROAD WIN OVER FLCC
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team took to the road on Tuesday night to post an impressive 68-55 win over the Lakers of Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY. The non-conference victory pushes the Fighting Tigers’ record to 4-0 on the season and marks their second consecutive road win of the year.
Cobleskill pounded the ball inside against the Lakers and their hosts had no answer for Fighting Tiger senior power forward Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, who notched her third double/double of the season battering the Finger Lakes inside players for 19 points and 18 rebounds in the contest. Freshman center Abby Wilcox, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, scored eight points to go with seven rebounds while freshman forward/center April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, tossed in eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds in her first action of the season.
On the outside, senior forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, hurt the Lakers from the perimeter with 16 points, including four three-point field goals, to go with 3 rebounds and two assists. The Fighting Tigers also received a solid outing from senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, with seven points and two assists and from senior forward Andrea Piedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School, with eight points and four rebounds on the night.
“I thought that we did a great job of establishing the post tonight with 35 points and 37 rebounds. We didn’t shoot the ball exceptionally well but we were able to create additional offensive opportunities off the boards,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “They played all zone until the last few minutes and I thought we did a good job of working the ball around and finding the open person. Tonight we were able to utilize our bench to our advantage and because we were fresher I think we did an excellent job of establishing our tempo throughout the night. We mixed things up defensively and I think we did a very good job in the first half but not so a good job in the second half. We are still a work in progress but it was good to get everyone playing together before this weekend’s tournament at Cayuga.”
The Fighting Tigers will next play at the Cayuga Community College Holiday Tournament this weekend hosted by Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY on Saturday November 18th when they meet Dean Junior College at 5:00 PM in the tournament’s opening round. Depending on Saturday’s outcome Cobleskill will meet either the winner or loser of the Hudson Valley Community College versus Cayuga Community College game on Sunday November 19th.
