COBLESKILL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HUNTS DOWN CLINTON COUGARS 74-33
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team hit the road on Saturday traveling to Plattsburgh, NY to meet the Clinton Community College Cougars for the second time this season after opening the season with a 51-37 victory against the Cougars. The Fighting Tigers proved adept at hunting away from the friendly confines of the Iorio Gymnasium as they brought back a lopsided 74-33 victory from the North Country. The victory puts the Cobleskill overall record at 7-3 on the season.
After leading 41-18 at the half the Fighting Tigers used their trademark team defense to decide the issue early in the second half. After the Cougars scored six points in the first minute of the second stanza the Fighting Tigers put the defensive clamps on and held their host to only nine points over the final 19 minutes of play.
Cobleskill displayed an impressive inside/outside attack as senior guard/forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, went over the top of the Cougars with 24 points ,including four three-point field goals, to go with six rebounds. On the inside senior power forward Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, pounded the paint for 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals while freshman center April Ackermann, Cochecton, NY, Sullivan West High School, chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals on the afternoon.
Also making significant contributions for the Fighting Tigers were senior guard Erinn O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, who filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, who contributed eight points, four rebounds and three steals and freshman center Abby Wilcox, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, who chipped in six points and grabbed seven rebounds in the contest while providing a strong presence on the defensive end of the floor.
“During my time here it has never been easy for us to travel up there and play well but today we did a great job from the start of coming out energized and being focused on what we needed to accomplish,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “We controlled the boards, shared the basketball extremely well as evidenced by the number of assisted baskets we had and everyone who played contributed in a positive way to the outcome. In terms of taking steps to get better as a team today was a big one for us.”
Cobleskill will return to action on Tuesday December 5th when they take to the road to meet the Twins of Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, NY for a Mountain Valley Conference match-up with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
