FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN SINK FMCC RAIDERS 67-42 IN JOHNSTON, NY
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team posted their most impressive road victory of the season defeating perennial Mountain Valley Conference power Fulton-Montgomery Community College by a 67-42 margin on the Raiders home court in Johnstown, NY last night. The victory pushes the Fighting Tiger overall record to 9-3 overall with a perfect 4-0 mark versus league opponents.
Once again the Fighting Tigers dominated the paint as freshman center April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots and senior power forward Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, posted her fifth double/double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, kept the Raiders honest from the outside with 11 points converting on three three-point shots to go with four rebounds.
Cobleskill also received strong play from senior guard Erin O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, who scored seven points, passed out five assists, made four steals and took down three rebounds and from senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, with seven points, three assists and three rebounds on the evening. Freshman center Abby Wilcox, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, helped out inside with five points and seven rebounds while senior Andrea Piedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School, who scored six points and had three rebounds.
“This was the first time our program has ever won a game in this building so we entered today viewing it as a big respect game,” said fourth-year Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “I don’t think that they’ve ever really respected us as a basketball program nor do I think we’ve done much to earn anyone’s respect based on the way we’ve played here in the past. This was a respect game because we needed to show people that we could beat a good program on the road which I think we did tonight. In the past they’ve dictated the tempo of the game, they were the hunters and we played scared. Tonight I think that right from the opening tip; we took control of the tempo and dictated how things were going to go. Defensively our press seemed to surprise them and our changing defenses constantly frustrated them. Offensively we dictated the flow of the game by doing all of the little things well like making hard basket cuts, setting solid screens and protecting the ball. This was a great win for our team and an important win for our program.”
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday December 16th when they host Onondaga Community College at 1:00 PM.
