FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S B-BALL MAULS CLINTON 63-35 IN SEASON OPENER
On Friday evening the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team took their number twelve NJCAA Division III National Poll ranking out for a test drive to Plattsburgh, NY to meet the Cougars of Clinton Community College to open the 2007-08 campaign. The result was pretty much what the national pollsters would expect as the Fighting Tigers mangled and mauled the host Cougars running over their hosts by a 63-35 margin to open the season 1-0.
The issue was decided by halftime as the Fighting Tigers used their trademark aggressive defense to force 16 first half Cougar turnovers on their way to a 36-11 advantage from which the home team could not recover from.
“With all of our young kids, we’re still trying to find the right balance as far as whose on the court,” said Fighting Tigers Head Coach Josh Suttles. “We came out defensively and played about as good as we could at this time of the year and it really was our defense that sustained us the whole night. Our offense will come around; we had a couple of stretches where we couldn’t put the ball in the basket, but that had more to due with us learning each others tendencies than it did with their defensive schemes.”
Freshman guard Nichole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, led all scores with 17 points while freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, made an impressive entry into Region III action with 10 points, 11 rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists. Freshman center/forward Breanne Sauve, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, also chipped in 10 points and three rebounds on the night for the Fighting Tigers.
The Fighting Tigers will next open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday November 6th when they host the Lakers of Finger Lakes Community College as part of a basketball doubleheader with the Fighting Tiger men. The Cobleskill women will take the floor versus the Lakers at 5:00 PM with the men’s game to follow at 7:00 PM. Admission to all Cobleskill regular season home games is free to the public.
