COBLESKILL WOMEN B-BALL GROUNDS CORNING RED BARONS 53-46
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team grounded a determined group of visiting Red Barons from Corning Community College last night at the Iorio Gymnasium by a 53-46 margin. After altering the Red Barons’ flight plan the Fighting Tigers improve their overall record to 4-0 on the season. Cobleskill is currently ranked twelfth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
After trailing by as many as nine points in the early going, the Fighting Tigers rallied to close the first half trailing by a 23-21 margin. After the break Cobleskill turned the defensive pressure up forcing a number of turnovers and hurried shots by the visitors outscoring the Red Barons 32-23 during the stanza to secure the victory.
The Fighting Tigers’ Gloversville connection led the way to the victory as freshman guard Laura Tisinger, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, posted her first career double/double notching season highs with 15 points and 10 rebounds on the evening while Tisinger’s former high school teammate freshman center/forward Breanne Sauve, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, scored her season high of 17 points, to lead all scorers, to go with five rebounds.
Cobleskill also received another strong effort from freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, who scored nine points and from freshman guard Nicole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, who scored five points, made three steals and passed out two assists.
The Fighting Tigers will next head to Auburn, NY, over the weekend to participate in the Spartan Holiday Tournament hosted by Cayuga Community College on Saturday November 17th and Sunday November 18th. Cobleskill will open the tournament on Saturday evening when they meet the Panthers of Tompkins-Cortland Community College in the opening round with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 PM.
