FIGHTING TIGERS MAUL HOLYOKE COUGARS 50-37 IN WOMEN’S HOOPS
With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team made the annual journey to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on Tuesday night to renew their rivalry with perennial NJCAA Region XXI power Holyoke Community College on the Cougar’s home court in Holyoke, MA. The Cougars entered the contest ranked fifteenth in the current NJCAA Division III National Poll while Cobleskill held the national poll’s number twelve position. When the fur stopped flying the Fighting Tigers found themselves on the winning end of a 50-37 scored to improve their overall record to 7-0 on the season.
“This is always a difficult game at this time of the year before we head into break on the road but I thought we did a good job defensively holding them to only 37 points on their home court,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “We were able to play a lot of people tonight which gave us a chance to rest some players and give them a chance to recover from some nagging injuries that have been hampering their performances. Now we’ve got to play at Broome on Tuesday night after break which is going to be a tough one.”
Freshman forward Sharee Daniels, Poughkeepsie, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals while freshman guard Nicole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, added 12 points, three rebounds and two assists on the evening. Freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, continued to be a force inside for the Fighting Tigers with five points, seven rebounds and five blocked shot in the contest and freshman forward Marie O’Malley, Oneonta, NY, Oneonta High School, scored her season high of nine points to go with four rebounds on the night.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday November 27th when they travel to Binghamton, NY, to meet the Hornets of Broome Community College as part of a basketball doubleheader with the women taking the court at 6:00 PM followed by the Fighting Tiger and Hornet men’s teams tipping off at 8:00 PM.
