FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN RANKED 5TH IN NJCAA NATIONAL POLL
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team recorded one of the biggest jumps in the NJCAA Division III National Poll as the Fighting Tigers leapt from the number twelve position to the number five ranking in this week’s poll. The Fighting Tigers are currently 7-0 overall on the season including a 1-0 mark in Mountain Valley Conference play.
For the year to date, Cobleskill is ranked third nationally in scoring defense allowing only 47.6 points per game and fifteenth nationally in offensive scoring at 64.1 points per game. The team also ranks fifteenth nationally in field goal percentage connecting on 35.2% of its attempts and is currently thirteenth in free throw percentage at 62.9 %.
Freshman guard Nicole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, leads the team offensively averaging a team best 13.7 points per game while picking off 3.8 steals per game to go with 1.3 assists per contest. Additionally for the Fighting Tigers 6’3” freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, averages 9.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 block shots per game while shooting a team leading 48.3% from the floor while freshman forward Sharee Daniels, Poughkeepsie, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, 8.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.
Cobleskill has also received contributions form senior swing-player Trista Thomas, Brooklyn, NY, Erasmus Hall High School, who averages 7.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.2 assists per game, freshman center/forward Brianne Suave, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, 8.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and from freshman guard Laura Tinsinger, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, who averages 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per contest. Freshman forward Marie O’Malley, Oneonta, NY, Oneonta High School, has also played a role in the team’s success averaging 3.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in a reserve role.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday November 27th when they travel to Binghamton, NY, to meet the nation’s number three ranked team; the Hornets of Broome Community College, as part of a basketball doubleheader. The women taking the court at 6:00 PM followed by the Fighting Tiger and Hornet men’s teams tipping off at 8:00 PM.
